It was built by the faithful of Tuguegarao under the supervision of Fr. Antonio Lobato de Santo Tomás, OP from January 17, 1761 to 1766. The said priest is also credited for creating the present town plan of Tuguegarao and for writing the La Arte Lengua de Ibanag from April 26, 1771 until June 22 of that same year. Its facade is known as the “Tuguegarao Style” and soon, nearby parishes of the Cagayan Valley copied it. It became the seat of the Diocese of Tuguegarao on April 10, 1910. Destroyed during the last year of the Second World War (1945), it was rebuilt from 1945 until 1967. It became a Metropolitan Cathedral when Tuguegarao became a Metropolitan Archdiocese on September 21, 1974.
